  • Reduction in Methane Content: Excessive moisture dilutes biogas, reducing the concentration of methane and decreasing its calorific value.

Using well-dried organic waste and balancing high-moisture content materials with dry matter like sawdust or straw can help reduce excess moisture.

2. Effective Drainage Systems

Installing water traps and proper drainage mechanisms in biogas pipelines ensures that condensed moisture is regularly removed, preventing blockages.

3. Use of Desulfurization and Dehumidification Units

Biogas plants can use moisture removal units such as silica gel filters or dehumidifiers to reduce excess water content from the gas before utilization.

4. Regular Maintenance Checks

Routine inspections of digesters, pipelines, and storage tanks help in early detection and mitigation of moisture-related issues.

5. Optimizing Temperature and pH Levels

Maintaining an optimal temperature range (35–40°C) and balanced pH levels ensures efficient microbial activity, leading to better digestion and moisture control.

Given Kerala’s high humidity and monsoon-driven moisture levels, biogas plant operators must adopt climate-specific strategies. Using covered digesters, installing ventilation systems, and ensuring proper insulation can significantly improve moisture management.
